Economic Highlights

In the US, the headline release is set to be May’s inflation data. Early PMI survey indicators suggest that price pressures have picked up again. With output prices rising at the fastest pace so far this year, the official CPI figures will also be closely watched. Elsewhere, updates on retail sales, industrial production and housing starts will offer further clues into the latest consumer and factory activity. Lastly, University of Michigan Sentiment data rounds off a busy week of US releases.

Over in Europe, the UK is set to publish a range of economic reports including March output figures and preliminary Q1 GDP figures. Services helped offset a downturn in manufacturing in March, with overall output growth remaining positive. Meanwhile, labour market figures will be keenly observed, particularly as higher payroll taxes raise questions over job growth. In Germany, the ZEW economic sentiment survey is scheduled. Market analysts will track the results, which could offer an early glimpse into the country’s ongoing economic prospects.

Lastly, in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the week begins with the publication of China’s inflation figures over the weekend. As for Japan, a raft of releases are due in the days ahead, with Q1 GDP data and industrial production figures the key highlights. In Australia, national employment numbers will be carefully examined, especially after recent business surveys pointed to continuing job market strength. Complete this week’s schedule is Hong Kong and Malaysia’s Q1 GDP data, along with trade reports from Singapore and Indonesia.
