Economic Highlights
In the US, all eyes will be on the latest inflation figures for May. The highly anticipated data release comes as Federal Reserve (Fed) chair Jerome Powell faces ongoing pressure from President Trump to reduce interest rates. Aside from inflation, markets will also focus on the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index. This should offer updates into both household confidence and inflation expectations heading into the summer months.
Across the Atlantic, labour market and GDP figures from the UK are the two standout highlights. Recent PMI data signalled a subdued start to the second quarter, which included two months of declining employment across both manufacturing and services. Markets will also be keeping track of eurozone trade and industrial production data, with PMI indicators showing weakened export orders as a direct consequence of higher trade tariffs.
Elsewhere, China’s inflation and trade numbers lead the way in terms of releases in the Asia-Pacific region this week. Official and Caixin PMI data has hinted at sluggish trade momentum over the past month. Elsewhere, Japan publishes its final Q1 GDP and industrial production figures, while India’s inflation report rounds out the week’s key regional data.
