Economic Highlights

In the US, the main focus of attention will be on the Federal Reserve’s June policy meeting. Market consensus is predicting that rates will remain unchanged, against the backdrop of ongoing tariff-driven inflation concerns and a resilient labour market. Elsewhere, other key releases include retail sales, industrial production, housing starts and building permits. A solid performance in services last month contrasted with weaker manufacturing output, suggesting uneven momentum heading into the months ahead. Across the border, Canada publishes its retail sales figures.

Over in Europe, several central banks are scheduled to meet, including the Bank of England (BoE), the Swiss National Bank, Norges Bank and the Riksbank. While no changes are expected from the BoE, markets will look for clues around policy softening relating to weaker growth and easing inflation. In a busy week for the UK, inflation and retail sales data will also be released, Meanwhile, eurozone trade data and the ZEW sentiment index for Germany will provide additional context on regional growth prospects, as policymakers weigh up their next moves.

Lastly, in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) rate decision headlines a busy lineup of central bank meetings, with policy reviews also expected from Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan. The BoJ is expected to hold steady for now, with upcoming inflation and trade data likely to guide future moves. China will publish an array of reports for May, including industrial production, retail sales, unemployment, and credit growth. Moving south, Australia will report on employment, while New Zealand releases its first-quarter GDP figures.
