Economic Highlights
n a busy week of US data, market attention will be focused on Friday’s release of the core PCE price index, which is the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) preferred measure of inflation. This follows mixed signals from recent price data, with consumer inflation edging higher in August while wholesale prices fell unexpectedly. Elsewhere, final Q2 GDP figures, durable goods orders, home sales and inventories will also be published, alongside consumer confidence numbers. These releases come as markets weigh the likelihood of further rate cuts going forward. The Fed recently initiated its first round of policy easing since December, as policymakers signalled the potential for two more cuts this year.
Meanwhile, in Europe, investors will be tracking consumer confidence data as well as fresh economic updates from major economies. Germany reports new trade and industrial figures, while France’s outlook will be watched closely for signs of disruption from political uncertainty. In the UK, the focus will be on how inflation and labour market conditions are responding to recent policy changes, with higher employer taxes and wage adjustments having pushed costs higher and led to job losses. As a result, the Bank of England is under pressure as it seeks to balance inflation risks with slowed growth momentum.
Lastly, in the Asia-Pacific region, there are August inflation updates from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, while key trade and production data is due from Thailand, Taiwan and Singapore. Taiwan also reports retail sales and export orders, with South Korea publishing its latest business and consumer confidence readings. Rounding off the region’s economic reports, the Bank of Japan meeting minutes should provide fresh insight into policymakers’ views on inflation and growth trends.
