Economic Highlights

Across North America, most of the attention will be on Canada’s upcoming inflation and retail sales figures. The results will be interesting, particularly after recent PMI data indicated declining average selling prices for the first time since the beginning of 2021. This points to an environment of easing inflationary pressures, despite an ongoing rise in input costs. In the US, new and existing home sales data are scheduled, while in Mexico, Q1 GDP figures should offer key insights into the country’s latest economic performance.

Over in Europe, inflation is the highlight of the week, as both the UK and eurozone publish the numbers for April. The UK’s data release will be closely followed by market watchers, after PMI reports showed a steep rise in selling prices. Manufacturing costs soared, with firms reported rising costs linked to wage and tax changes. Elsewhere in the UK, retail sales are also due, with the data expected to show muted results as consumer confidence remains under pressure.

As for the Asia-Pacific region, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and Bank Indonesia (BI) both meet this week. Market consensus points towards a lowering of lower interest rates from the RBA, amid concerns over the broader impact of rising global tariffs. In China, key industrial production and retail sales figures for April are highly anticipated, in the wake of the US-China agreement brokered last Monday. Meanwhile, Japan updates both its inflation data, trade figures and machinery orders, while Thailand publishes its Q1 GDP numbers.
