Economic Highlights

In the US, the August labour market report is the highlight release of the week, with the upcoming non-farm payrolls report offering important signals around the Federal Reserve’s next policy move. Recent PMI data showed that employment rose at its fastest pace since January, rising for a sixth successive month. Business activity has also expanded, with ISM and final PMI surveys set to confirm this momentum. Over the border, Canada publishes its latest employment and trade figures.

Across Europe, markets await key updates including eurozone inflation, retail sales and GDP data. PMI price indicators suggest that inflationary pressures remain subdued, while softer services activity hints at weaker eurozone retail sales. Meanwhile, the UK is due to publish retail sales data along with the Halifax house price index. The country’s services sector showed stronger growth in August, pointing to a potentially more positive retail reading.

Over in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, all eyes will be on GDP and trade figures coming out of Australia. Elsewhere, inflation data will be released from South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Pakistan, offering a wider perspective on regional price trends. Lastly, the central bank of Malaysia will meet this week, with no changes to the nation’s interest rate anticipated.
