Economic Highlights
In the US, market attention will be focused on several key releases, including the second estimate of Q2 GDP and July’s core PCE price index inflation figure. With CPI and PPI data both showing higher-than-expected core readings, the PCE release is an important indicator of rate cut expectations ahead of September’s Fed meeting. Also due this week is durable goods orders, new home sales, personal income and spending, and consumer confidence. In Canada, Q2 GDP data is set to be published, with growth expected to remain weak despite easing trade pressures.
Over in Europe, inflation updates will be closely watched with Germany, Italy, France and Spain all publishing preliminary August readings. Recent PMI data pointed to soft inflationary trends, suggesting price growth could remain contained. Sentiment data will also be in focus, with eurozone economic sentiment and Germany’s Ifo and GfK surveys due. Early PMI results signalled cooler business confidence in Germany, while there were small signs of a recovery in manufacturing after a prolonged downturn.
Across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, headline central bank meetings take place in South Korea and the Philippines, with the Reserve Bank of Australia also reporting its meeting minutes for July. Elsewhere, China publishes its NBS PMI data, India updates its Q2 GDP, and Australia releases its July CPI figures. Lastly, Japan has a busy calendar, with consumer confidence, industrial production, and unemployment data all scheduled.
