Economic Highlights

In the US, all eyes will be on the labour market, with May’s non-farm payroll (NFP) report and job openings data for April both due. Initial PMI results indicated a dip in US employment during May, fuelling concerns over a weaker jobs report despite stronger output growth. Across the border in Canada, trade and employment figures are expected, alongside the Bank of Canada’s June policy meeting. Currently, markets remain uncertain over the timing of a rate cut amid persistent inflation challenges.

Over in Europe, market attention will be on the European Central Bank (ECB), which is widely expected to announce a 25-basis-point rate cut. The move follows another month of weak business activity and softer selling price inflation across the bloc. Ahead of the ECB meeting, eurozone flash CPI figures will also be updated, giving last-minute price indications prior to the ECB meeting. Elsewhere, Germany will publish its latest trade and industrial production figures, while in the UK, mortgage lending data and final PMI reports, including construction, are also due.

Lastly, in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, Australia’s first-quarter GDP data will be the subject of much investor focus, along with trade figures and minutes from the latest RBA meeting. Meanwhile , inflation numbers will be released across several key regional economies including South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines. These updates, combined with PMI reports, will provide important insight into APAC’s economic performance last month.
