Economic Highlights

In the US, the main focus will be on August inflation data with both CPI and PPI due this week. PMI price indicators point towards persistent inflationary pressures, raising the risk that consumer prices could move above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target soon. Meanwhile, a preliminary September University of Michigan sentiment survey will also be released. This will provide a useful update on consumer confidence, which has remained below long-run averages thanks to ongoing concerns about inflation and unemployment.

Across Europe, the European Central Bank meets in September with policymakers expected to hold rates steady amid signs of improving economic growth and inflation running close to target. Elsewhere, the UK will release GDP data for July, coming shortly after survey evidence indicated slower growth in early Q3 before picking up again in August. Lastly, Germany will publish trade and industrial production numbers, offering further insights into Europe’s largest economy.

Over in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, market attention will be on mainland China with both trade and inflation data on the schedule. Recent PMI data showed export orders contracting at a slower pace, with a stabilisation in factory output prices coming despite falling services charges. In Japan, investors await the publication of the country’s final Q2 GDP reading. The initial estimate read 1.0%, which provided confirmation of growth performance in Q2.
