Economic Highlights
In the US, the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, due to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, is the highlight of the week. A 25-basis-point rate cut is widely expected, though a 50-basis-point reduction cannot be ruled out. In a busy few days for US economic releases, retail sales and industrial production data will also be published. Across the border, Canada reports key employment and trade data, giving further insight into growth conditions after a period of subdued activity.
Over In Europe, the Bank of England is expected to keep its policy rate on hold at 4% following August’s 25-basis-point cut. Other data highlights for the UK include inflation and retail sales figures, alongside labour market updates. Meanwhile, the eurozone releases industrial production figures while Germany reports its latest trade and business climate indicators. Early PMI data suggests modest growth in services activity across the region and broadly muted inflation, providing context ahead of potential policy decisions.
Lastly, in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, most of the attention will be on Japan, where an interest rate decision is due from the Bank of Japan, along with inflation and trade data. Elsewhere, industrial production and retail sales figures from China will provide insight into growth at the end of the quarter, with the latest PMI data pointing to a stabilisation in factory output prices. The world’s second-largest economy will also reveal its latest unemployment figures for August.
