Economic Highlights
In the US, the headline data release of the week is the Q1 GDP figures. Early economic indications point to slow growth, so it will be interesting to see what the data shows. Elsewhere, April’s non-farm payrolls report, core PCE inflation updates, good trade numbers, factory orders and ISM surveys all feature in a busy US schedule. In neighbouring Canada and Mexico, Q1 GDP data is also due for release, with market analysts noting the weakness shown in earlier business reports.
As for Europe, the main focus of attention will be on the latest GDP and inflation data figures from the eurozone. These reports will be closely watched, as the eurozone economy continued its struggles in April, while business confidence fell to its lowest level for more than two years. Meanwhile, Germany publishes its GfK consumer confidence figures, offering insights into household sentiment. In the UK, mortgage lending numbers and the final manufacturing PMI report should help to measure the overall health of the economy.
Over in the Asia-Pacific region, the Bank of Japan meets this week for its interest rate decision, While no rate changes are anticipated this time around, rising inflation will be closely watched. China’s new PMI surveys will show how factories and service businesses are performing following the latest tariff moves. Other important data is due from Australia, with inflation and trade figures, while Japan also publishes its industrial production and retail sales reports.
