Economic Highlights
In the US, a busy week of releases awaits. Headlining a packed US calendar is the minutes from May’s FOMC meeting. Here, fresh comments from Federal Reserve (Fed) officials will be closely watched, particularly as concerns around tariffs and inflation remain. On the data front, markets await the second estimate of Q1 GDP, alongside the core PCE inflation figures. Elsewhere, reports on personal income and spending, durable goods orders, home prices, and consumer confidence are expected. In Canada, Q1 GDP data is due, with recent PMI data pointing to the weakest quarterly performance since the end of 2024.
Over in Europe, inflation data is set to dominate the week’s agenda. Preliminary numbers are due from Germany, France, Italy and Spain, just days after the flash eurozone PMI release. Recent PMI results showed a drop in output prices in France and softer selling price inflation in Germany, increasing expectations for further easing of price pressures. Germany’s GfK Consumer Confidence data will also be published, with business optimism showing a slight rebound in the eurozone
In the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, central bank meetings in New Zealand and South Korea will be monitored, with speculation of potential rate cuts amid ongoing trade tensions. Meanwhile, Australia’s CPI figures, India’s GDP report, and mainland China’s official PMI will provide key signals on growth and inflation. Lastly, Japan publishes updates on consumer confidence, unemployment, industrial production and retail sales. Recent PMI data signalled a downturn in the country’s private sector activity.
